National History

Theta Nu Xi is the first multicultural sorority in the southeastern United States. It was founded by seven women: Geeta Kapur, Natalie Barker, Peggy Long, Melissa Murchison-Blake, Brenda Eribo, Katherine Stanley, and Janelle Poe, whose vision was to bridge the cultural gap at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the Greek community and beyond.

In the spring of 1996, biracial Founding Monarch Melissa Murchison-Blake was in search of a sisterhood that embraced all women and crossed cultural boundaries without having to deny half of her heritage. She did not want to deny half of her heritage by choosing between historically white and black sororities.

The Alpha Chapter of Theta Nu Xi was officially recognized at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill on April 11, 1997. The sorority incorporated on April 29, 1999, and the national organization was founded on August 21, 1999.

Chapter History

The Alpha Rho Chapter is the first and only Greek organization that is multicultural by inception in the state of Oklahoma. It was founded in the spring of 2017 by the fourteen women of the Seismic line: Jema Esparza, Paola Palomino, Rabail Sohail, Aana Nadeem, Biridiana Escobar, Erica Pasillas, Yadira Medrano, Gabriela Lopez, Jacqualine Nguyen, Mehik Malik, Diana Prieto, Jada Scott, Audra Brulc, and Gabriela Garcia. Present within the founding line were Mexican-American, Pakistani-American, Vietnamese, Black, Hispanic, Slavic, and Irish cultural identifications, and it was the relatability in their differences that ignited their bond.

These women wanted to be united through a sisterhood that captured their ideal being, and it was the multicultural aspect of Theta Nu Xi that caught their interest in the fall of 2016. Additionally, the women wanted to bring an organization to the campus of the University of Oklahoma in which they could fight injustices and make a change in its attitude towards multiculturalism.

The Alpha Rho Chapter of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. was officially recognized at the University of Oklahoma on April 28, 2017. The women of Seismic and Adrastos are ecstatic to make an impact at the University of Oklahoma through Theta Nu Xi.
